The SCMEA Choral Division is excited to announce our line up for the 2018 SCMEA Professional Development Conference, to be held February 16 & 17, 2018.
Dr. Eric Nelson will present a two-part session entitled, “Wow! What a Great Choir!” Part 1 will answer questions such as, What elements of musicianship matter most What do the best choirs all have in common? What yields the biggest “bang for the buck?” This session will concentrate on our musical goals. Part 2 will answer questions such as, Having clear goals is great, but how do we get there? What do we do in rehearsal to help our choirs improve? This session will offer some practical advice on how to move our ensembles from where they are to where we want them to be.
Dr. Jeffery Redding will present a two-part session entitled, “Strategies for Motivation and Inspiration: Providing Conductors with a Structure for Motivating and Inspiring Singers.” Part 1 will address creating and nurturing a motivating and inspiring environment; control the environment that in turn controls you. Part 2 will address motivating and inspiring through the music; celebrating human connection through vulnerability and reciprocity.
In addition to their interest sessions, Dr. Nelson and Dr. Redding will each lead a choral music reading session.
Our featured performing ensembles will be:
- College of Charleston Concert Choir, Dr. Robert Taylor, director
- University of South Carolina Men’s Chorus, Dr. Alicia Walker, director
- Dreher High School Concert Choir, Walter Graham, director
- Seneca Middle School Honors Chorus, Carla Brock, director
Also, in a first-of-its-kind performance, student members of the Choral, Band, and Orchestra Divisions will combine forces to present Mozart’s Requiem during the general session on Friday morning. The performance will be conducted by John Clanton, a Furman University alumnus. Clanton will also keynote the general session.
